Seems like only way to be able to delete media assets is to be an admin. Is this possible to customize with other roles as well? Set my client as an user role, but even with "media" enabled the delete button is gone.

Under normal use you shouldn't need to delete assets. They'll be automatically deleted once they are no longer in use.
For how long will they be in the assets before they get deleted? If not in use.
On the next cleanup after they are unused and older than 24 hours. Assets remain 'in use' if they're in an items undo history (otherwise undo wouldn't work).
