Dev items appearing on live site
The dev site and live site both point to the same database. So when I add an item to a region on the dev site for testing it will add it on the live site. Is there an easy way to avoid this from happening?

Yes - point your dev site to a different database! I would absolutely not advise working with two sites on one set of data.
