Struggling to create new regions on my hosting environment

Hi there,

On our new hosting environment we can't create new region anymore. e.g on my master page if I add <?php perch_content('Intro'); ?> and reload the page the region doesn't appear in the control panel.

The hosting company is struggling with it because there is no error logs on the server so they are struggling to debug it. Can you see anything with this?

This is my last reply from the hosting company

I am not getting anywhere with this I'm afraid. Can I ask you to debug this with perch as I cannot find anything in the standard logs to indicate what is going wrong. I am hoping perch will be have a debugger switch that could be used to show an error. With an error to work from, I should be able to resolve it for you. At the moment, there is nothing to go on and I am stabbing in the dark, so to speak.

Then here is the problem. The new setup has slave databases. These are not writeable and can only be read from. The issue you are facing is that perch is requiring you to visit the page to populate the information to the database. This would be fine in a singular instance but you are now on a clustered mysql setup so the databases cannot be written to unless you are on the master server.

Is there anything you can advise on perch working on a clustered environment with multiple DB servers, One master (DB writes) and 4 slaves (DB Reads)?

You need to make sure that whenever you write to the database you're doing on the master. That's going to be critical for apps like Blog and Forms which write data from the front end, and obviously for any control panel use.

So the problem we face is on some master pages there are perch regions so when the client creates a new page or in this specific case changes the master page on a page the regions are not being generated due to them (the client) being on one of the 4 read only slaves.

Here is more of what the hosting company have said

The new setup offsets the MySQL load using 'read-only' slaves. Unless you are on the master web server, you cannot insert into the database. I was not aware that perch CMS required you to visit a page you create first in order to propagated the regions to the admin CMS. I thought this would all be done via the admin panel of your site and I was wrong in this assumption. Unfortunately the best fix is for editors to use the host file edit.

I'm not sure what to do here.

This is a follow up from our hosting company.

I apologise for the frustrations here. This appears to me to be a limitation of perch in a clustered environment whereby you need to visit a page to propagate to a database. In a singular database server set up this is fine but as you are on a balanced solution it is causing the issue.

In order to cope with a read heavy environment as you know we deployed a master DB servers that people write to and a number of read only slave databases that people read from (ie. people visiting the website). As perch requires you to visit a web page to propagate the regions to the database we need to set the editor's computers doing this to load from the Master Database - I've spoken to the team and we can see no way around this as Perch requires a page to be visited before the regions can be propagated to the database so you need to load that page from the master web. We did not know about this requirement of Perch so unfortunately could not have foreseen this, we're not developers so are learning perch as we go along here.

If [client] have a dedicated IP we can add that to the load balancer so they always get access to the Master web as you need to make sure whenever you write to the database you write to the master DB (and the master web always accesses the master db). However if they were editing on the move this would be an issue as if their IP changed it would not go to the Master by default. This is a limitation of this setup and there is nothing we can do about that I'm afraid.

Unfortunately this will happen using Perch in a clustered environment like this so [client] will need to work around it if they want to run their Perch website on such a setup.

Can you advise anything here to the hosting company or to us to get some sort of solution other than getting the clients IP address on the load balancer?

But we seem to be facing issues when generating regions when we refresh the new page the regions don't get created due to the front end being on one of the slaves.

Yes, I understand the problem. If you have a different URL for admin then the new pages will be loaded on that URL and the regions will be created.

This is the process our hosting company has suggested to get this working

The process to assign a subdomain for the admin section is fairly straight-forward. We first need to identify what subdomain to use, from a security standpoint I'd recommend avoiding the obvious choices such as admin.domainname.com.

Then you'll need to point the A record for that subdomain to XX.XXX.XXX.XXX and once that's done we'll begin working on moving the Perch admin files to that subdomain.

What do we need to do to get this working on a sub domain. I take it we would need to change the config and config.local files. How would you go about this?

No, you shouldn't need to change anything. Leave the Perch folder where it is, just point the new domain to the same location as the main one. So

 secret-admin.domainname.com/perch
