Gallery error since 2.8+

I am getting this fatal php error when I try to change an already existing gallery item, on any of the fields (text or image):

PHP Fatal error:  Call to a member function return_instance() on boolean in ...pathToPerch/core/lib/api/PerchAPI_Form.class.php on line 408

This began after I updated to 2.8 - still an issue at 2.8.2
