Version control/deployment and database structure

I was to use version control and deployment for my Perch websites. When updates are released I will overwrite the files for the local dev version and use version control and deployment to put this live.

My question is do Perch updates edit the structure of the database often or at all? I'm concerned the update will work locally but with version control and deployment simply updating the live files that have changed, the database structure might not be updated if it needs to be? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
