list / detail page with 'detail' on external site

Hi, just seeking some guidance on building a list / detail page of product items that will display in typical list style - BUT the link for 'more detail' for each item should actually go to an external site. Should I just replace the link that currently uses the slug with an external url that the user can edit in the detail template? Thanks for any guidance
