Forgo username in favour of email address option
I would like to be able to login with my email and password into a perch admin area, without needing a username. It that could be an option that would be great :)

I don't think there's anything that would stop you using an email address as the username.
Yeah but then you would have 2 different email address fields as a users, which will cause confusion when a user wants to edit there email address for example. It's simply easier for most people to use their email address then to remember yet another username. Allowing to login with their email address just makes life a little easier :)
There's no option for that.
