Is there a way of getting the total items in a category, similar to the blog app's handling of categories for other sets in the categories app?

Is there a way of getting the total items in a category, similar to the blog app's handling of categories for other sets in the categories app?
Using standard perch 2.8.13.
What sort of content do you have the categories applied to?
Regular content - <perch:content />.
It's used in a multiple item region for a simple events listing with venues (one category) and event types (second category).
I don't think the category counts are implemented in that scenario yet. It's on my list.
