Sorting item by last modified (any content field, not just a single field)

Am wondering how to sort content by last modified, not just for a single field, but any field within the template item?

You can only sort by fields in your template - so if you don't have a modified date field there's nothing to sort by.
Bugger. Ok so every time an item is updated, will have to update the date/time field. Would be good if the field could auto populate current date and time (I know there's the button for current day select, however not aware of auto time).
What's the use case? What are you trying to achieve?
Having a 'New Products' page where it shows items by last modified (any field, e.g. Title, description, price, image etc.)
If you ordered by modified, that would show up old products that had been edited.
If you're using Runway you can sort by
_datefor a creation date.
