assets buckets problem

I have successfully created buckets under resources to use with Assets, using a buckets.php file in /config

In Assets I can see my buckets listed, but I can only upload images to the 'default' bucket.

When I try to upload images to a selected bucket (e.g. sitepictures), the images appear to upload but then nothing shows in that bucket

Debug shows no errors, says

Setting alert: You are viewing assets filtered by bucket ‘Sitepictures’ Clear Filter (filter)
