Need to update from 2.6.6 to current

Have read directions once with lines of code to update. Went back to find it again and found another page.

So where are the right directions to updating this version and upwards in perch.

Do I just replace the core file and say ckeditor files or is there more. One set of directions said that the others I can not find now were much more complicated. Which is right?
