Template include within another template include

As per the title! Is it possible to include a template inside a template which is being included elsewhere? I'm finding I have to duplicate content across templates and it would be nice just to have to edit one template even if it is being used within a template that is an include itself. Currently it doesn't seem to work and I have to copy and paste the template completely across.
