Yes I see now, replacing /edit/ with /revisions/ on all regions does the trick.
Space in the smart bar seems the same for multi and single regions? - I think revisions would be a great feature for all regions. It's something that's been requested fro my project so am really trying to get this part working.
If it's not something being worked on, in theory could I implement in my install myself if i edit core files?

The page on which it appears doesn't exist for single item regions - they don't have the item listing.
We cannot offer you any support if you edit core files.
