Dataselect date question

Hi,

I'm building a press page which just has a thumbnail image, title and date.

Each article contains a datefield - month and year. I'm currently filtering on the year so when I do this in the query string - press.php?s=2009 - I see all the articles from that year. That all works fine.

What I'd like to do now is to dynamically create a set of buttons from the years in the date field so that there's some kind of control for the user to select the year they're looking for.

Do I use a dataselect for this and pull the year from that field? Any help gratefully received as always :)
